Janome HD9 Professional: HLx5 Needles and Versioned Bobbins

Sewlume |

For the Janome HD9 Professional, check the needle system and the bobbin version separately. Janome’s Australian documentation specifies HLx5 needles and a large metal bobbin. Janome’s US Version 2 bobbin page also gives an important warning: Version 1 and Version 2 parts are not interchangeable. “Fits Janome” or “HD9 bobbin” is not enough information to settle both questions.

Start with your machine’s complete identification and its documentation. An unversioned HD9 Professional name does not, by itself, establish which bobbin revision you need.

Keep the documentation with the model. This original machine photo comes from Janome’s 2018 Australian HD9 Professional brochure. It illustrates that documented machine; the photo does not identify a Version 1 or Version 2 bobbin.

Read HLx5 as the needle system

Janome’s Australian HD9 Professional page lists an HLx5 needle set in size 14. Its brochure, page 2, also identifies HLx5 and shows that requirement printed beside the thread guide.

The system marking is useful buying information. The brochure’s close-up shows HLx5 near the needle area. Size 14 describes a size within that system; it does not make every size-14 sewing-machine needle equivalent. This small original photo is displayed without enlargement.

When shopping, record the system as well as the permitted size and point for your project. Do not replace an explicit system requirement with a packet that gives only a familiar size number. For help reading the labels, see needle system versus needle size. Use your exact machine manual for insertion and threading instructions.

Choose the bobbin by version, not just the HD9 name

Janome’s standard clear-plastic bobbin page explicitly excludes HD9. That is a direct reason to avoid extending the ordinary Janome plastic-bobbin recommendation to this machine.

The separate Bobbin HD9 V2 page describes a revised large metal bobbin and warns that Version 1 and Version 2 parts are not compatible. Its broad model-name list includes an unversioned HD9 Professional entry, so keep the version condition in the product description when using that list. The broad name does not cancel the explicit revision warning.

Before ordering, use the machine’s documentation and the exact replacement reference to establish the revision. If the available labels do not settle it, give Janome or an authorized service technician the machine’s identification and the old bobbin’s details. Ask which revision and reference apply. Do not assign a version from paint color or this brochure photo.

Keep three checks separate

What to record before buying
Part Information to match
Needle The required system, then an appropriate permitted size and point.
Bobbin The machine’s bobbin revision and exact replacement reference.
Foot or quilting setup The exact attachment and any required plate or other components.

For quilting, check the plate as well as the foot

The 2018 Australian brochure lists no drop-feed control and identifies an optional darning foot and darning plate. The Australian HD9 page likewise describes a darning plate rather than drop feed. For the machine covered by those instructions, do not substitute a generic “lower the feed dogs” setup from another Janome model.

Check the complete setup in your own machine’s instructions before choosing the attachment. A foot, a plate and a needle each answer a different compatibility question; one matching component does not establish the others.

For the broader lookup process, see Janome presser-foot compatibility. This guide keeps the HD9 documentation and revision questions explicit; it does not transfer the 2018 brochure’s specifications to other HD9 versions or related models.
