Pin Feed, a walking foot and free-motion quilting are different setups. For the Brother PQ1500SL and PQ1600S, start with the exact model’s manual and the foot intended for that operation. Their similar appearance does not establish that every attachment or instruction transfers between them.
One important difference: Brother’s PQ1500SL manual includes a dedicated walking-foot section. The current PQ1600S manual does not list a supplied walking foot or give that setup. That gap is a reason to verify an optional attachment specifically for PQ1600S, rather than applying the older model’s instructions.

Choose the manual for your exact PQ model
| Model and OEM manual | Relevant printed pages |
|---|---|
| PQ1500SL, version 02 | Foot mounting p.18; Pin Feed p.19; walking foot and free-motion foot p.23. |
| PQ1600S, version 02 | Foot mounting p.19; Pin Feed p.20; free-motion foot p.24. No walking-foot setup is given. |
These are printed page numbers inside the manuals, not the PDF viewer’s page count. Brother serves these documents from its separate PQ1500SL support page and PQ1600S support page. A different suffix or model needs its own lookup.
Pin Feed uses the machine’s feed pin
Both manuals describe a pin that rises through the fabric layers and moves with the feed dog. Pin Feed setup combines the selected feed mode, matching color-coded presser-foot pressure and an appropriate foot. Keep fingers away from the pin when the foot is lowered.
This is not an upper walking-foot attachment. Do not choose a walking foot merely because your project has several layers, or assume Pin Feed should remain active for every foot. Check the operation’s setup before combining a foot and feed mode.
The PQ1500SL walking foot has its own setup
The PQ1500SL manual identifies walking foot XA7253-001 and gives separate mounting instructions on printed page 23. Its operating fork engages the needle-bar screw; the manual limits speed to 500 rpm or less and says Pin Feed mode is neither advisable nor necessary with that foot.

Use those instructions for that documented PQ1500SL setup. The PQ1600S manual’s lack of an equivalent section does not prove that every possible walking foot is incompatible. It means this comparison cannot establish a PQ1600S walking-foot match: obtain an exact-model accessory reference and its instructions before ordering or fitting one.
Free-motion quilting is a third configuration
Both manuals direct users to reduce foot pressure and lower the feed dog for the free-motion quilting foot. Follow the exact model’s complete procedure rather than borrowing the walking-foot or Pin Feed settings.
Check mounting and feed-pin clearance before buying a foot
The foot-changing procedures in both manuals use a retaining screw, and the supplied feet provide clearance for the rear feed pin. A generic snap-on-foot label does not answer those mounting and clearance questions. Switch the machine off before changing feet and follow the model’s illustrated procedure.
- Name the operation. Decide whether you need Pin Feed, the documented walking-foot setup or free-motion quilting.
- Match the complete model and attachment reference. Save the manual or exact-model accessory evidence with the part number.
- Check what is included. Distinguish a complete operating attachment from a sole, guide or other replacement component.
- Keep setup instructions with the purchase. Feed mode, foot pressure and any speed restriction belong to the chosen model and attachment together.
