The Elna eXcellence 720PRO uses several foot arrangements: an ordinary clip-on sole and holder, the wide AD upper-feed system, the professional HP foot, and the optional HP2 Dual Feed Plus assembly. Choose the complete arrangement for the job. “9 mm” describes the machine’s stitch-width capability; it does not identify the required holder or needle plate.
Four arrangements, four things to check
| Arrangement | Matching components for the 720PRO |
|---|---|
| Ordinary clip-on foot | The appropriate sole and ordinary holder; check the selected stitch and foot letter. |
| Wide upper feed AD | The wide Dual Feed holder and matching AD sole, with the upper-feed drive engaged as instructed. |
| Professional HP | The professional HP foot attached directly to the presser bar, with the professional HP needle plate. |
| Narrow Dual Feed Plus HP2 | The HP2 assembly, with its upper-feed connection and the required professional HP needle plate. |
The 720PRO manual distinguishes the ordinary holder, AD and HP installations. Elna’s 720PRO optional-accessory sheet separately lists HP2. This guide covers those combinations on the eXcellence 720PRO; another Elna model needs its own exact accessory and plate lookup.
Ordinary clip-on soles use the ordinary holder
The manual shows the sole’s cross-pin aligning with the holder’s groove. That is different from attaching a complete foot assembly directly to the presser bar. For AD or HP, the manual says to remove the ordinary holder first. Buying a loose sole is therefore a different purchase from buying a complete upper-feed or HP assembly.
Wide AD needs its upper-feed connection

The AD holder attaches to the presser bar and its link engages the machine’s upper-feed drive. The manual’s installation sequence includes lowering the foot lifter and bringing the needle to its lowest position by handwheel before the final tightening. Use the complete illustrated procedure, with the machine locked out as directed.
A wide AD sole is not an HP foot, and a narrow upper-feed accessory needs its matching system. Similar metal toes do not identify interchangeable holders.
HP is a foot-and-plate combination

The professional HP foot, OEM reference 865-803-006, is intended for precise quarter-inch piecing and topstitching and requires the HP needle plate. On the 720PRO, the manual treats HP as a dedicated straight-stitch setup. Its plate is distinct from the ordinary zigzag plate and from the separately supplied straight-stitch plate. Match the HP foot with the specified HP plate before selecting the supported stitch.
HP2 adds upper feed and still requires the HP plate

The HP2 accessory page, OEM reference 202-416-005, specifies a narrow Dual Feed Plus system and requires the HP needle plate. The HP2 instruction leaflet repeats that plate requirement and directs you to the machine manual for changing the foot and plate. It also requires the Lockout key, or power off on machines without that key, while attaching or removing them.
Do not read “HP2” as a replacement name for the ordinary HP foot, or assume the wide AD holder makes the conversion by itself.
What to photograph before buying
Take a full machine-model photo, a side view of the installed holder and drive connection, a view of the foot’s mounting section, and a clear photo of the needle plate. Keep any accessory reference or identification letter visible. Those four views help resolve whether you need a sole, a holder-and-foot assembly, or the matching foot-and-plate combination.
For other Elna machines, start with our Elna width, Dual Feed and HP compatibility guide. Keep the exact model suffix when checking accessories; shared width or a similar family name does not establish the complete combination.
